1. FG freed 12,000 inmates in six years — Malami
The Federal Government on Tuesday revealed that over 12,000 inmates were released from various correctional centres across the country within the last six years in line with the policy of prison decongestion .
The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami stated this to members of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters during his 2023 budget defence session with the committee .
Malami, who made the declaration in response to question from Senator Ajibola Basiru (APC Osun Central ), said the Federal Government was able to decongest the over congested prisons across the country, through policy actions aside the Administration of Criminal Justice Act , meant for expeditious dispensation of justice.
“When this government came on board in 2015, the problem of prison congestions was at the front burner of national discourse, which made President Muhammadu Buhari to set machineries in motion in different ways for required solution.
2. Sowore fumes over exclusion from presidential debates
The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has claimed that the Nigerian Election Debate Group has excluded him from participating in the presidential debates ahead of the 2023 election.
The activist made the claim on Tuesday via his Twitter page, where he claimed that the debate organisers have settled for “failed and clueless candidates”.
He further ensured that the “fraudulent” debates would be stopped.
Sowore said, “It has come to our attention that the Nigeria Election Debate Group has excluded us from the series of Presidential Debates to herald 2023 election, as typical they’ve settled for failed and clueless candidates.
3. Ogun monarch blinds trader for dancing with queen
A trader, Wasiu Oduwole, has narrated how a traditional ruler, Oba Nureni Oduwaye, in Ogun State, blinded him for allegedly dancing with his queen.
Oduwole, who is a food vendor, disclosed that he was called by the owner of a hotel in Sagamu to prepare fish pepper soup for a birthday celebration. He claimed that some of the guests complained about the meal and he apologised.
The graduate of Olabisi Onabanjo University added that after his apology, the monarch accused him of dancing with his queen. He was told to go and beg the monarch, which he agreed to and while he was trying to prostrate to beg, the monarch kicked his left eye which immediately came out of its socket.

4. APC’ll deal with parties that can’t hold proper primaries in Lagos – Sanwo-Olu
Lagos State Governor, Babjide Sanwo-Olu, has expressed confidence that the All Progressives Congress, APC and the electorate in the state will humiliate some political parties that could not organize proper party primaries with votes, saying they are trying to reap where they did not sow
Sanwo-Olu stated this on Tuesday, at the commissioning of the 20-unit two-bedroom apartments, christened: “Love Gardens,” located on Allen Street, Surulere Local Government Area of the state, built by the Lagos State Development And Property Corporation, LSDPC.
According to the governor’, “We can see in some parties in the pages of the newspapers, to conduct a primary they cannot conduct it, all of them are now struggling helter-skelter and they are looking to sow where they have not planted.
‘’We don’t need to give them the dignity of mentioning their names but in Surulere and entire Lagos, we will deal with them.
5. Why Ajaokuta Steel Company is not yet fixed – Minister
Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Olallmikeka Adegbite, Tuesday, said that the eruption of COVID-19 in 2020 was essentially responsible for the non resuscitation of Ajaokuta Steel company in Kogi State.
The minister said that he had after participating in a Summit in Russia in 2019 announced that within 2 years, precisely in the first quarter of 2022, the company would come back on stream.
But according to him, the pandemic struck and stopped the Russians technical experts from coming.
6. 2023 Budget: We need more money to function – Special Duties Minister
THE Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, George Akume, has on Monday told the Senate that the Ministry needed more funds to carry out its responsibilities.
Akume who lamented over the current allocations and envelop system, said it has made it extremely difficult for the Ministry to perform effectively
Speaking in Abuja when he appeared before the Senator Yusuf Yusuf, Taraba Central led Senate Committee on Special Duties to defend the Ministry’s budget for 2023, the Minister told the Senators that the sum of N180 billion allocated to the Ministry for 2023 representing 71% reduction in the budget for the previous year is grossly inadequate to accomplish the sweeping mandate of the Ministry.
According to him, the envelope system has further incapacitated the ability of the Ministry to achieve its mandate to monitor special projects and interventions of the Federal Government as well as the implementation of constituency projects in care of members of the National Assembly.

7. Tompolo’s lawyer dismisses claims surveillance contract proves failed governance
Despite achievements recorded by Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSNL) in manning Nigeria’s crude oil pipelines in the past few weeks, there are still calls on the Federal Government to terminate the contract.
Lead consultant of TSSNL, Emmanuel Jakpa Esq., while reacting to the latest call by a group, the Academy of International Affairs, in Warri, restated that contrary to opinions in some quarters, the contract awarded to the company was not proof of failure of governance.
According to Jakpa, the Academy, which comprises former Ministers and diplomats had in a statement by its president, former Minister of External Affairs, Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to terminate the N4 billion contract to TSSNL, a firm linked to ex-warlord, Chief Government Ekpemupolo aka Tompolo.
The lawyer said the group in its statement observed that it was an exercise in futility to “ask some of those suspects involved in oil theft scandal to go round in search of illegal pipelines and oil criminals”.
8. Ataga: Chidinma, foster father had sexual relations, witness alleges
The Lagos State High Court at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) has heard that Chidinma Ojukwu, the alleged killer of the Chief Executive Officer of Super TV, Usifo Ataga, allegedly had a sexual relationship with her foster father, Onoh Ojukwu.
A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Olusegun Bamidele made the claim during a trial within trial to determine whether the court should admit the confessional statement Miss Ojukwu allegedly made in police custody.
The proceedings followed Mis Ojukwu’s contention during proceedings on October 27 that she did not make a confessional statement voluntarily, rather that they were obtained from her by the police under duress and by inducement.
Ojukwu, a 300-level Mass Communication student at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), is standing trial for the alleged murder with her sister and third defendant Chioma Egbuchu, and second defendant Adedapo Quadri.

9. Judicial task force to decide presidential candidacy of PRP’s Kola Abiola
A suit seeking the invalidation of Kola Abiola as Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) presidential candidate has been transferred to a task force of judges.
Justice John Tsoho had constituted the team of judges to determine all pre-election cases before the Federal High Court (FHC) in Abuja.
The inauguration by Tsoho, the Chief Judge, followed Justice Ahmed Mohammed’s commencement of his annual leave.
On Tuesday, the matter could not go on due to the absence of Justice Mohammed.
The registrar said Tsoho directed that pre-election cases before the court be transferred to the registry for transmission to the judicial task force.
The Chief Judge noted that the judges would have four weeks within which to dispose of the pre-election cases.
10. 2022 World Cup in Qatar ‘a mistake’ – Sepp Blatter
Former FIFA president, Sepp Blatter, has admitted that the decision to award this month’s World Cup to Qatar was a “mistake”.
The 86-year-old was at the helm of the world football governing body when its executive committee voted for the tournament to be played in Russia and Qatar in 2018 and 2022 respectively.
