Ronaldo was named Man United captain in their Premier League 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday.
The 37-year-old took the captain’s armband in the absence of midfielder Bruno Fernandes, who was suspended for the match, and defender Harry Maguire, who started on the substitutes bench.
Speaking after the match at Villa Park, Ten Hag explained the current ranking of captains at Man United, saying: “Harry Maguire is on the bench, our captain of the club.
Then it is about David de Gea, who is a leader but is a goalie and is far away from the outfield.”
“Then Casemiro is the leader, but he’s not speaking perfect English, so then Cristiano is the leader.”
However, Sherwood took issue with Ten Hag’s post-match comments and was scathing in his assessment of the former Ajax coach detailing his leadership rankings.

“What basically he’s saying, he was the fifth choice, wasn’t he? Why he has to justify why he’s given Cristiano Ronaldo the armband, I just don’t know. Just keep your mouth shut,” Sherwood told talkSPORT.
