1. US returns another $20m Abacha loot to Nigeria
The United States Department of Justice said it had transferred over $20.6m to the Federal Government in accordance with an August 23 agreement between the governments to repatriate assets stolen by late dictator General Sani Abacha and his co-conspirators.
According to a statement published on the DoJ website on Thursday, the repatriation brings the total amount forfeited and returned by the US in this case to approximately $332.4m.
In 2020, the department repatriated over $311.7m of the forfeited assets that had been located in the Bailiwick of Jersey.
Last year, the United Kingdom enforced the US judgment against the additional $20.6m.
2. Nigeria re-elected into ICAO board
Nigeria has been re-elected as a member of the International Civil Aviation Organization Public Key Directory Board for the fourth time.
The Nigeria Immigration Service revealed this in a Friday statement acquired by our correspondent.
The Service Public Relations Officer, Tony Akuneme, noted that in recognition of the vital role the country has been playing on the global stage of electronic travel documents, the nation wad re-elected as a member of the ICAO-PKD Board for the fourth time.
Akuneme said, “The ICAO-PKD is a central repository for exchanging the information required to authenticate electronic machine readable travel documents such as ePassports, electronic ID cards and visible digital seals.
3. Emulate Jigawa, stop open defecation, UN tells states
The United Nations, on Friday, applauded the Jigawa State government for becoming the first state in Nigeria to achieve the open defecation-free status.
It then charged other state governments in Nigeria to emulate Jigawa by working hard to rid their domains of open defecation activities in order to halt diseases caused by poor sanitation.
The Representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund in Nigeria, Cristian Munduate, gave the commendation and charge during her address at the ongoing World Toilet Summit 2022, organised by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources in Abuja.
She said, “I want to congratulate the government and people of Jigawa State. It is clear that Jigawa is becoming model. In that state, six million people came together to end open defecation.

4. Wike hails Buhari for releasing Niger Delta allocations since 1999
Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for approving all the monies accruable to the Niger Delta states since1999.
Wike made the commendation while speaking at the commissioning of the Doctor Nabo Graham Douglas Law School built by the Tivers state government on Friday.
According to Wike, part of the money was used for the numerous projects built by his administration.
Wike commended the president for not playing politics with the money despite being in a different political party.

A former governor of Ekiti, Ayodele Fayose said the People’s Democratic Party, PDP need to negotiate with the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi and Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state.
Fayose stated this while speaking in an interview with Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday.
According to Fayose, Obi and Wike could affect the chances of the PDP in the 2023 polls.
“Reconciling or negotiating with Obi will be a good thing and finding a way to make peace with these Wike people will be a good thing too,” he said.
6. Kidnapping: DIG inspects Lagos-Ibadan Expressway
DIG Jonhson Kokumo, in-charge of Force Criminal Investigation Development (FCID), on Friday assured motorists and commuters plying the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway of their safety on the highway.
Kokumo gave the assurance during his inspection visit to the highway following incessant cases of kidnapping and robbery of unsuspecting travellers in recent time.
The DIG, in company of the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Adebowale Williams and his team, visited the boundaries of Oyo State and Ogun on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

7. 2023: APC’ll sweep all elective posts in Zamfara – Yari
Alhaji Abdul’Aziz Yari, former Zamfara Governor has assured that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will win all the elective positions in the 2023 General Elections in the state.
Yari’s remark is contained in a statement issued in Gusau on Friday by Malam Yusuf Idris, the State APC publicity Secretary.
Yari spoke at Talata Mafara, Talata Mafara Local Government Area while meeting with the party’s stakeholders from Bakura, Maradun and Talata Mafara LGAs.

The Governor of Ekiti State, Hon Biodun Oyebanji, yesterday swore in newly appointed commissioners and special advisers.
Oyebanji also appealed to members of the All Progressives Congress in Ekiti to continually market the party’s presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to be able to win the 2023 poll.
