1. Nigeria won’t face food crisis, FG replies IMF

Nigerians should not be afraid of any form of food crisis, the Federal Government said on Monday, as it kicked against the projections of the International Monetary Fund.

It stated that several measures had been put in place to forestall the scarcity of food in Nigeria, stressing that there was no need for panic among citizens across the country.

On Monday, The PUNCH quoted the International Monetary Fund as saying Nigerians should brace up for higher food prices/risks in 2023 due to recent floods and high fertiliser prices.

But the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development opposed the position of the global financial institution, as it provided a document detailing what the FMARD had done and was doing to avert such a crisis.

2. Politicians will use, dump you, IGP warns policemen

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, has asked officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force to be apolitical before, during, and after the next general elections.

The IG issued the warning during a visit to the Kogi State Police Command headquarters in Lokoja on Monday.

He said, “Let me sound a note of warning to you all: be apolitical before, during, and after the forthcoming election. You must not allow yourselves to be used because they will dump you after the elections.”

“You have a duty and responsibility to uphold the constitution and to protect the lives and property of citizens; you cannot afford to fail in carrying out these tasks.”

3. Kidnappers selling human parts abduct LASPOTECH undergraduate

An undergraduate of the Lagos State Polytechnic, Marvelous Omobobola, who was abducted by a kidnap syndicate in the state, has been released after his family members paid N200,000 ransom.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Omobobola went to school on Saturday to sign a SIWES form.

After he was done, the undergraduate boarded a tricycle to his hostel in the Odogunyan area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.

The 28-year-old said the tricycle operator was conveying him and other passengers to their destinations in Odogunyan when he suddenly veered onto a street to avoid the traffic ahead.

4. World Bank to inject $700m for adolescent girls education in 19 states

World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Shubham Chaudhuri, has disclosed that the World Bank was set to inject the sum of $700 million for adolescent girls education in 19 states of the country.

He made the disclosure on Monday, during a parliamentary summit on fast-tracking Nigeria’s demographic transition, organised by the Office of the Speaker, House of Representatives and the National Population Commission, supported by the World Bank in Abuja.

According to him, the World Bank was committed in supporting Nigeria in empowering adolescent girls and youths, adding that it would help the nation in achieving its demographic transition.

5. Gunmen abduct Ex-Akeredolu’s aide, demand N100 million ransom

A former Senior Special Assistance to the Ondo state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, Mr Richard Omosehin, has been abducted by six gunmen at his Igbekebo residence, in Ese Odo Council area of the state.

Meanwhile, the state police command, which confirmed the abduction, said it had begun search for the victims while investigation into the matter had commenced.

A family source told vanguard, that the former governor’s aide was kidnapped on Friday.

According to him “Richard, a strong leader of the APC was kidnapped by six gunmen who came to the community on a speed boat and went to his private house where he was dragged into the boat and they sped off

6. World Cup 2022: Bale bails Wales against USA

Gareth Bale’s penalty kick in the 82nd minute ensured USA never ran out winners on the night.

Timothy Weah, the son of former World footballer of the year, George Weah, had put the Americans ahead with a cool finish in the 36th minute.

Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic got an assist off the goal as he set up Weah who made no mistake to slot past the Welsh goalkeeper.

The second half saw series of chances fall to the USA to bury the game but none got converted.

7. Support group decries media attack on Tinubu

One of the support groups of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), The Frontliners for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has criticised some media houses for alleged bias against the party’s presidential candidate.

The Frontiers, as it is popularly called, noted that such media houses allow themselves to be beclouded by partisanship, prejudice, pecuniary considerations and hatred in their reports, especially in the build-up to the 2023 presidential election.

In a statement by its Director General Segun Ogunade, the group frowned at what it called the recent unwholesome behaviours of some media houses that reported “flawed stories calculated to damage the reputation of some politicians, especially those in opposing camps”.

8. Peace awards for Abdulsalami, Jonathan, Malami, NBA President, others

Former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, and his civilian counterpart, former President Goodluck Jonathan, were among prominent Nigerians conferred with the prestigious National Peace Award 2022.

Also honoured with the award were the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN); President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yakubu Maikyua (SAN), and Chief Paul-Harris Ogbole (SAN).

Other eminent Nigerians, who were equally conferred with the award include Bishop Matthew Kukah; Esama of Benin Kingdom, Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion; HRM Eze Williams Ezugwu Eze Ogbozara III of Opi Kingdom, Nsuka; and former President of Ghana, Dr. John Mahama.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo; Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Ramatu Tijjani; wife of the Chief of Army Staff, Mrs. Salamatu Yahaya, were among other Nigerians conferred with the award.

9. Nigeria’s failure to take population growth seriously dangerous – Gbajabiamila

House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, on Monday, said Nigeria’s population growth must be taken seriously.

The Speaker warned that failure to harness and maximize the advantages of the changing population structure was dangerous.

He spoke in Abuja at the “Parliamentary Summit on Fast-Tracking Nigeria’s Demographic Transition” organized by the National Population Commission (NPC) and the World Bank.

Gbajabiamila charged the government at all levels to identify and be deliberate in taking actions that would maximize Nigeria’s huge manpower.

10. Two to die by hanging over armed robbery in Ekiti

An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti has sentenced Owolabi Deji (30) and Opeyemi Oluwakomolafe (22) to death by hanging for conspiracy, armed robbery, rape, and escape from lawful custody at Ado Ekiti Prison.

The convicts were arraigned before Justice Monisola Abodunde on 13th January 2017 for committing offences bordering on conspiracy, armed robbery, rape, and escape from lawful custody at Ado Ekiti Prison on 1st December 2014.

The charge stated that “the defendants, on the 14th day of July 2015 at Oketa Area of Iluomoba Ekiti in Gbonyin LGA of Ekiti State, did conspire to commit armed robbery on Lucas Agboola and Oladele Oseyemi as well as Adeyemi Comfort on the same day at Araromi Street, Aisegba Ekiti, while armed with cutlass and gun.”

On the same date, time and place, the defendants also raped a 35-year-old woman, according to the charge, the defendants escaped from lawful custody at Ado Ekiti Prison on the 1st day of December 2014.
