1. Asset declaration: Court stops INEC chairman’s removal

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja on Wednesday frustrated plans to scuttle the 2023 general election by removing the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, over alleged failure to declare his assets.

Apart from quashing the allegations of false assets declaration against Yakubu, the court stopped security agencies from investigating him.

Meanwhile, the coalition of United Political Parties and other socio-political organisations have hailed the judgement, describing the judiciary as the last hope of the common man.

The Spokesperson of CUPP, Ikenga Ugochinyere, hailed the judgment as “a major New Year gift to Nigerians by the judiciary.”

2. Gunmen attack travellers in Kogi, shoot journalist

A communications specialist and senior crime reporter with Daily Trust Newspaper, Idowu Isamotu and five others have been attacked by gunmen along the Lokoja-Obajana road in Kogi State, The PUNCH reports.

Our correspondent exclusively gathered that the attack happened at about 5 pm on Wednesday.

In an SOS message sent to our correspondent, the reporter described the assailants as “terrorists”.

He said, “I’ve just been shot by terrorists along the Lokoja-Obajana road. Only God saved us.

3. Truck crushes NAF officer to death in Kwara

A Nigerian Air Force officer serving in Ilorin, Kwara State was on Tuesday crushed to death by a truck while another officer was seriously injured in the Eyenkorin area, a suburb of Ilorin, the state capital.

Our correspondent gathered that the accident occurred at an Air Force security checkpoint after the brake of the truck failed when the driver was stopped by the officers for a normal check before entering the state capital.

The deceased officer was identified as LCPL Goselle Nanpon while another officer who sustained a spinal cord injury in the accident was identified as LCPL Yahaya Ayuba.

“The officers were on duty when the truck crushed one of the Air Force officers and critically injured another one after its break failed as it was approaching the air force checkpoint.

4. Atiku’ll prioritise completion of Gas Revolution Industrial Park — Okowa

VICE Presidential Candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, Wednesday, promised that the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP for the 2023 general election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar would prioritize the completion of the Gas Revolution Industrial Park project in Ogidigben, Warri South West Local Government Area, Delta State if elected.

Okowa who betated the All Progressives Congress, APC’s led Federal Government for abandoning the Gas Revolution project, also slammed the APC administration for the moribund Delta Steel Company, Ovwian-Aladja now Premium Steel Company.

He stated this at Ogbe-Ijoh and Otor-Udu Local Government Area, during the PDP’s campaign rally to the areas. He lamented that as important as the gas revolution park was to the nation and the world, the Buhari administration had failed to ensure its realisation.

He said the world was moving towards gas as alternative energy source, but decried that the Federal Government’s ineptitude had put the gas project in jeopardy.

5. Tinubu’s baggage responsible for Buhari’s absence from APC campaign — PDP

The Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign has said the integrity deficit of the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, is responsible for the continued absence of President Muhammadu Buhari from the APC campaign.

The spokesperson of the Atiku-Okowa Presidential Campaign, Kola Ologbondiyan, said this in a statement in Abuja, late on Wednesday.

He noted that Tinubu was the least qualified person to campaign using integrity as a tool because he is deficient in that score.

6. FG spent N12.87trn in 2022 – Zainab Ahmed

The Federal Government said it spent N12.87 trillion against the N17.126 trillion budgeted for 2022 as of Nov. 30, 2022.

Mrs Zainab Ahmed, Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, said this at the Public Presentation and Breakdown of the Approved Federal Government 2023 Budget on Wednesday in Abuja.

Ahmed said out of the N12.87 trillion, N5.24 trillion was for debt service and N3.94 trillion was for personnel costs.

“The actual spending as of November 30 was N12.87 trillion.

7. 184 die in 17 states from Lassa fever as cases hit 1,038

There were 1,038 Lassa fever cases in Nigeria between January and December 18, 2022, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).

The agency said between December 12 to 18, 2022, a total of ten new cases were recorded in four states: Ondo, seven; Bauchi, one; Taraba, one and Nasarawa, one.

Also, cumulatively, between January and December 18, 2022, at least 184 confirmed Lassa fever-associated deaths have been reported from 17 states.

Ondo, Edo and Ebonyi have the highest number of deaths at 54, 29 and 20.

8. How gunmen killed my expectant wife, by Ebubeagu commander

Kalu Chima, the Commander of Ebubeagu Security Network in Afikpo South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has narrated how gunmen stormed his house and shot dead his seven-month-pregnant wife, Urenma.

The gunmen also burnt his two houses in the attack on New Year’s day.

The Nation had reported how gunmen invaded Chima’s house in Amaoso, Amaetiti, Amaoso Edda in the LGA and shot Urenma dead.

Chima told our reporter in Abakaliki that the attack was an offshoot of the recent clashes between supporters of two political heavyweights in Ekoli Edda, in the same local government.
