Manchester United secured their first piece of silverware under manager Erik ten Hag by winning the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United 2-0 on Sunday. The match saw United take the lead early on with a goal from Brazilian midfielder Casemiro in the 17th minute. Marcus Rashford doubled the lead just before halftime, and his stunning strike proved to be the winning goal of the match.
The prize money for winning the Carabao Cup has come under scrutiny as Manchester United’s earnings were considered low compared to the stature of the club. The runners-up, Newcastle United, received half of the prize money, earning £50,000.
The clubs were able to split the gate receipts from the match, which saw a total of 87,306 fans in attendance at Wembley Stadium. Given the popularity of the event and the high turnout, the gate receipts are estimated to be a substantial amount.
The semi-finalists, Nottingham Forest and Southampton, received a consolation prize of £25,000 each. Unfortunately, all other participants, including the four beaten quarter-finalists, failed to receive any prize money.
The Carabao Cup has been a competition where many smaller clubs have made their mark, with unexpected upsets and shocking results in the past. However, the prize money distribution has faced criticism, with smaller clubs receiving less compared to bigger clubs.
Manchester United’s victory in the Carabao Cup final will undoubtedly provide a morale boost for the team, given it is their first piece of silverware since 2017.
