Sneijder’s comments come after Bassey has been the subject of heavy criticism since his move to Ajax last summer.
He stated that Bassey may be a fantastic player in another league but he has a hard time when he is released and has to play from the back. He also believes Bassey needs to find a middle ground in handing in the ball faster to avoid making mistakes.
The Nigerian defender, who has scored a goal and provided three assists in 21 Eredivisie matches, has a contract with Ajax until June 30, 2027. Ajax’s decision to pay such a huge sum of money for Bassey has been criticized by many, especially due to his current form, which has seen him struggle to maintain a spot in the team. Despite this, the club has not commented on the issue.
“I still think €23m is too much,” Sneijder told Veronica Offside, as per, VI.
“This concerns what is demanded of a defender. He plays at Ajax, so he will have to be able to play football. He might be fantastic in another league. But he has a hard time when he keeps getting released and he has to play from the back.”
He added, “He has to find a middle ground in handing in the balls a little faster. Knowing your weaknesses is also a quality. When you realize that you have to hand in the ball quickly, otherwise things can go wrong.”
Calvin Bassey who has scored a goal and provided three assists in 21 Eredivisie matches has until June 30, 2027, before his current contract with the Dutch team expires.
