JUST IN: Sule Lamido Threatens Legal Actions In Jigawa Polls
  • Governorship candidate of the PDP in Jigawa State gubernatorial elections, Mustapha Sule Lamido has condemned the electoral process.

  • According to Mustapha Sule Lamido, the process was marred by vote-buying which he states had characterized the exercise.

  • Lamido alleged that Spaghetti and noodles were used to bribe and buy out voters to gain votes.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Jigawa State, Mustapha Sule Lamido, has threatened to take legal action over the outcome of the just-concluded governorship election, alleging that vote-buying characterized the exercise.

Lamido, who spoke during an interview with the BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday, alleged that voters were given spaghetti and noodles to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Umar Namadi, who was declared winner of the election.

EDITOR’S PICKS:

According to the Jigawa PDP candidate, his party leadership would meet to decide on the next line of action, as he claimed that the election was marred by malpractices, including vote-buying and security agencies’ complicity.

“I thank the people of Jigawa state who came out en masse to vote for me. I thank them for their love, and I appeal for calm and patience. Our party leadership would sit and decide on the next line of action,” he said.

“I’m not discouraged by the outcome of the election. In fact, I’m even motivated to start anew. It’s sad that the security agencies were complicit. We would not allow the politics of bribing the gullible electorates with spaghetti and noodles to be the vehicle through which the people’s destiny would be mortgaged.”

Recall that the returning officer for the Jigawa State gubernatorial election, Professor Zayyanu Umar, had announced Namadi as the winner of the election with 618,449 votes, defeating Lamido who scored 368,726 votes.

The PDP candidate’s allegation of vote-buying is not new in Nigerian politics, as it has been a recurring issue in the country’s electoral process. However, it remains to be seen if his threat of legal action would yield any result or if it would be one of many similar cases that do not lead to a reversal of election results.
