The operation was carried out following intelligence reports received by the agency about the shops. The products are meant to boost sexual performance and some were said to have been manufactured in Ghana.
According to Mr Tamanuwa Baba, Deputy Director of Investigation and Enforcement Directorate at NAFDAC, laboratory analysis of the products indicated that they contain a chemical substance called Pyridine which is potentially harmful to the human body.
“We found a lot of unregistered products in the two shops. We will begin immediate investigations,” said Baba.
The sales representative in the Zuba shop has been apprehended pending the return of the shop’s owner, who is said to be on a journey. NAFDAC plans to get in touch with the owner to determine where the products are sourced from.
Baba warned that some of the unapproved products flooding the Nigerian market can be harmful to human health, and urged Nigerians to be cautious.
“After the investigation, these products are going to be destroyed because they have not been registered by us,” he said. Similar unregistered products were also discovered in a shop at Utako known as Kabo Investment Limited.

The agency has conducted a similar operation in Sokoto where some of the products were removed from a shop. “I can tell you that Pyridine which is the chemical that is contained in some of these products can cause cancer, skin irritation and even lead to death,” warned Baba.
