-
South-South Coalition Group for a United Nigeria has called for the zoning of Nigeria’s Senate President seat to the South-South region of Nigeria.
-
The group made the call following a press conference held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on Monday.
-
This follows the outcome of the 2023 elections that has the South West and North East presenting representatives for the seat of President and Vice President of the Federal Republic.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that a group known as the Coalition of South-South Community for United Nigeria, Justice and Equity, has called for the zoning of the Senate Presidency position of the 10th National Assembly to the southern part of Nigeria. The group made this call during a press conference held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Monday.
The Chairman of the Coalition, Eseme Eyibo, stated that the call for the position to be zoned to the South-South was based on the need for equity, fairness, and justice. He added that since Nigeria already has a President-elect from the Southwest, it is preferable for the Senate Presidency to be occupied by someone from the South-South.

Eyibo noted that since the inception of democratic government in 1999, the Southeast has produced five Senate Presidents. In the spirit of equity, the position should be micro-zoned to the South-South as the West is already occupying the position of the President of the country.
The Coalition emphasized that the Senate Presidency position requires someone with pedigree, capacity, and experience. They also stated that the South, which produces oil, has not been part of the priority list of the government.
Eyibo said, “We are united by this demand, appeal, and request to the APC, President-Elect, Sen. Bola Tinubu, the Vice President-Elect and Senators-Elect that the position of Senate President should be zoned to the South-South. It is a request to the APC, the President-elect, Asiwaju Tinubu, and all well-meaning Nigerians that the office of the Senate President should be zoned to the South-South.”
He added, “What an average Nigerian is looking for now, is strong institutions, not strong individuals, sustainable development goals, and we need somebody who has the pedigree and capacity to actualize that for a united Nigeria, that person is here in the South-South.”
