1. Buhari bids farewell to outgoing Vietnamese envoy

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Thursday, in Abuja, bade farewell to the outgoing Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to Nigeria, Luong Thinh.

“We have virtually lived together. Congratulations on a successful term. Best wishes in your next assignment,” Buhari told Thinh at the State House, Abuja, after concluding his three-year tour of duty.

The meeting comes four months after Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s four-day visit to Vietnam to discuss frontiers of collaboration in agriculture and technology.

According to a statement signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, Buhari thanked the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for its support in the areas of security and economic development, expressing the wish that bilateral relations between the two countries would continue to grow.

2. Twitter removes ‘legacy’ verified blue ticks

Twitter on Thursday said goodbye to its ‘legacy’ blue ticks following Elon Musk‘s controversial decision to switch up the platform’s verification system.

As of Thursday evening, our correspondent observed that ‘legacy’ verified accounts had their blue tick removed by Twitter. 

The development has affected several individuals including journalists as Twitter insists on a $8 monthly payment to subscribe to its ‘Twitter Blue’ if account holders must retain their verification badge, or for those who want to get the blue tick newly.

Numerous checkmarks disappeared from Twitter accounts for the users who were reluctant to pay $8 a month for the traditional blue badge.

3. Soldiers kill 54 terrorists, nab 122 suspects

The Defence Headquarters has disclosed that troops of the Armed Forces had in the last two weeks eliminated 54 Boko Haram and Islamic State of West Africa terrorists, arrested 122 terrorists, collaborators, and rescued 468 kidnapped victims in various operations across the North-East, North-Central and North-West regions.

The Director, Defence Media Operations, Major General Musa Danmadami, revealed this on Thursday in Abuja at the bi-weekly press conference on the operations of the armed forces.

He noted that 30 of the rescued victims who were injured had been hospitalised while the remaining were reunited with their families.

4. EID – EL FITRI: Our collective freedom possible if –  NLC

Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has ay said Nigerians’ collective freedom is possible only when citizens stand and work together refusing to be divided by the preaching and pleadings to various primordial ties and vacuous sentiments.

In an Eid-Fitri message, President of NLC, Joe AJaero, said “As Ramadan comes to an end and the Moon is seen with all its excitement and anxieties heralding such occasions, Congress felicitates with all Nigerians especially workers who have borne the brunt of the continuous and unrelenting consequences of heartless and visionless governance in the country.

“While suffering, hunger, and disease may have increased exponentially in the Country in the midst of the opulent lifestyles of those who have captured the levers of power and their refusal to heed simple and clear-headed advice to salvage our nation, the essence of this holy period strengthens all of us and gives us hope of a better future not anchored on our leaders but on the supreme and divine powers of the almighty God.

5. Eid-il-Fitr: NSCDC deploys 52,000 personnel

Commandant General CG of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps NSCDC, Dr Ahmed Abubakar Audi, has approved the deployment of 52, 000 officers and men of the Corps to provide security during this year’s Eid-el- Fitr celebration across the Federation.

The CG specifically tasked Zonal Commanders to ensure proper security coordination of their zones, while State Commandants are to effectively mobilize Area Commanders, Divisional Officers, Component Commanders and all Special Forces to achieve watertight security for maximum protection of the populace and critical national assets.

“Our resolve to guarantee peace, safety and protection of lives and critical assets in synergy with other security agencies must be carried out through our collective inputs.

6. Lagos pays N50.7bn to retirees in 4 years

The Lagos State Government on Thursday said it had paid over N50.7 billion to 13,928 retirees, from 2019 till date.

The Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Mrs Ajibola Ponnle, made this known during the 100th Retirement Bond Certificate Presentation Ceremony, organised by the Lagos State Pensions Commission at Ikeja.

Ponnle, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Office of Establishments and Training, Mr Olawale Musa, said that the payments were made to retirees in the mainstream, local government, State Universal Board, Teaching Service Commission and other state parastatals.

She also said that the state government had paid accrued pension rights of N5 billion into the Retirement Savings Accounts of 1,768 retirees, alongside their monthly contributions.
