Shehu’s statement was in response to Buhari’s call for forgiveness during his recent Eid-el-Fitr outing in Abuja, where he urged Nigerians whom he had offended to pardon him. The Presidential aide emphasised that Buhari has demonstrated his forgiving nature through his actions over the years.
According to Shehu, there is no politician or journalist currently in detention for criticising Buhari or his administration. He added that the President maintains a stable mental and emotional state, going to bed without harbouring negative thoughts towards anyone and sleeping soundly.
Shehu’s statement is aimed at quelling rumours that Buhari is harbouring ill-will towards certain individuals or groups in the country. The President’s critics have accused him of using state power to suppress opposition voices, leading to the arrest and detention of political opponents and journalists.
