1. Buhari seeks Senate approval for $800m loan
The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), on Wednesday, sought Senate approval for $800 million loan to finance the National Social Safety Network Programme.
The request was contained in a letter read by the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, to lawmakers on the floor of the Senate.
The President partly wrote, “Please note that the Federal Executive Council approved an additional loan facility to the tune of USD800 million to be secured from the World Bank, for the National Social Safety Net Programme and the need to request for your consideration and approval to ensure early implementation.
2. EFCC arrests ex-power minister, Sale Mamman, over N22bn fraud
Former Minister of Power, Sale Mamman, has been arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over an alleged N22bn fraud.
According to reliable sources, the former minister was arrested early Wednesday and was subsequently detained at the headquarters of the anti-graft agency.
The arrest is said to be in connection with the Commission’s ongoing investigation into alleged corruption in the execution of some power projects.
3. Rights violations now reduced in military – Army Chief
The Chief of Civil Military Affairs, Nigeria Army, Major Gen. MG Kangye, has said that the creation of the Department of Civil-Military Affairs has significantly reduced cases of human rights violations among military personnel.
Speaking in an interview with The PUNCH in Jos on Wednesday on the sideline of the second quarter 2023 Civil-Military Cooperation Media Chat of the Army headquarters, Kangye insisted that most of the challenges militating against civil-military cooperation in Nigeria had been eliminated.
The Army chief said, “The civil-military relations in Nigeria are working. It is achieving positive results especially since the department was created because the litigation and reports about Nigerian Army personnel that were received during the last quarter by the Legal Department has significantly reduced.

4. Supreme Court verdict: Jegede congratulates Adeleke, Osun People
The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last gubernatorial election in Ondo State, Eyitayo Jegede(SAN), has congratulated the Osun State governor, Sen. Ademola Adeleke, over his victory at the Supreme Court.
Jegede, in a statement he signed and posted on his Twitter Account, also congratulated the entire people and residents of Osun State for the tenacious and dogged fight to keep their mandate.
He described the pronouncement of the Supreme Court that Governor Ademola Adeleke was duly elected as Governor of the State at the July 16 governorship election as a victory for democracy.
Jegede said, “I congratulate His Excellency Sen. Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke @AAdeleke_01 and the entire people and residents of Osun State for the tenacious and dogged fight to keep their mandate. By this victory, good has triumphed over evil and light over darkness. Congratulations!”
5. May 29: Group urges religious leaders, CSOs to eschew violence, uphold peace
Christian and Muslim leaders, youth groups and Civil Society Organizations across Kaduna State have been sensitized by the Global Peace Foundation ( GPF) Nigeria to work towards ensuring that peace prevails ahead of the May 29th inauguration of political office holders in Nigeria.
Country Director of the Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Nigeria, Rev Joseph John Hayab who spoke during a one-day conference organized by the GPF with the theme ” The role of faith leaders in dowsing post-election tension “, told the participants that the post-election period should be peaceful while citizens should not create unnecessary tension and cause havoc.
The conference was attended by Muslim leaders, Christian clergies, representatives of the Christian Association of Nigeria(CAN) and the apex Muslim organisation, Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI); youth and women groups, journalists and politicians, people living with special needs, among others.
6. Senate Presidency: Come up with new zoning formula, Izunaso tells Tinubu
A few days after the National Working Committee NWC of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC came up with a controversial zoning formula for principal officers position in the 10th National Assembly, one of the top contenders for the position of Senate President, Senator Osita Izunaso said his aspiration to lead the senate of the 10th National Assembly is well on course and in the best interest of the nation.
A statement from Izunaso’s Media Office signed by Kehinde Olaosebikan indicated that the senator spoke during a parley with some media executives in his campaign office at The Destination, Abuja.
Izunaso urged the APC to douse the tension generated by the zoning formula already fouling the political atmosphere of the country, by coming up with a zoning arrangement that would guarantee unity and national cohesion.
