Having previously collaborated with Anderson on the 2018 stop-motion film “Isle of Dogs,” Johansson eagerly accepted the opportunity to work with him again when he approached her for “Asteroid City.”
She expressed her admiration for directors who embrace hard work and precision, qualities she found in Anderson. The director’s enthusiasm for repetitive takes and the process of capturing nuances on film resonated with Johansson, likening it to immersive play rehearsals.
Scarlett Johansson explained that Anderson shared the script for “Asteroid City” with her during the pandemic-induced lockdowns in 2020.
Despite the challenging circumstances, Anderson was already immersed in thoughts about his next project, and Johansson welcomed the chance to discuss her character in-depth.
Described as a “very famous star of stage and screen,” Johansson characterized her as an enigmatic individual who shares glimpses of her past and what motivates her. Johansson appreciated Anderson’s dedication to exploring character nuance.
In crafting the role, Anderson drew inspiration from a specific time period and film icon. The film is set in 1955, and Johansson revealed that she and Anderson discussed references to shape her character’s essence.
Their primary influence was the legendary actress Bette Davis, a two-time Oscar winner who left an indelible mark on the industry through her challenging on-screen portrayals and the battles she fought behind the scenes.
Johansson described Davis as formidable, vulnerable, and captivating, indicating that while she is not portraying Davis herself, Davis’ career served as a foundation for understanding her character’s trajectory and the experiences of women in that era.
When viewers encounter Johansson’s character in “Asteroid City,” she will be at the peak of her career, exuding confidence in her place in history. Johansson noted that while her character has already achieved great success, she remains driven and eagerly anticipates playing remarkable roles while securing her lasting legacy as one of the greats.
Acting in an Anderson film requires an understanding of the director’s meticulous style, which extends to the film’s dialogue pace and rhythm. Collaborators who are familiar with Anderson’s work often find themselves at ease with the demanding nature of his direction.
Although “Asteroid City” introduces several new faces to Anderson’s cinematic world, Scarlett Johansson primarily shared scenes with Jason Schwartzman, who has appeared in seven of the director’s films.
Johansson praised Schwartzman’s experience and steady support, particularly since her scenes were shot towards the end of production.
Despite the challenges, Johansson filmed her scenes just eight weeks after giving birth. The extensive groundwork she and Anderson had put into developing her character made it difficult to find a last-minute replacement.
Fortunately, Schwartzman had already completed most of his own close-ups and coverage, allowing him to be present as a supportive scene partner. Johansson expressed gratitude for Schwartzman’s constant presence and assistance in running lines, highlighting their shared approach to their craft.
Scarlett Johansson also talked about Wes Anderson’s directorial style, stressing it’s appeal to Schwartzman as well, citing his precision and ability to play with dialogue.
The entire cast of “Asteroid City” comprises strong actors with theatrical backgrounds, giving the film a sense of a theater troupe assembled by Anderson.
