EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a public alert regarding the potential occurrence of heavy rainfall and thunderstorm activities in several states in the northern part of the country.

These cells are expected to move westward, leading to the development of squally thunderstorms in certain cities.

The statement further revealed that the thunderstorm cells are projected to propagate eastward, resulting in thunderstorms accompanied by squalls in Plateau, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa, Jigawa, Adamawa, Yobe, Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, and Katsina states within the next 2-6 hours.

NiMet cautioned that areas experiencing thunderstorms might encounter strong winds prior to the onset of rainfall. Consequently, it advised the public to exercise caution and seek shelter indoors, especially during heavy rainfall, to avoid potential hazards such as lightning strikes.

The agency emphasized the possibility of trees, electric poles, unsecured objects, and weak structures being affected by the strong winds.

The agency called on disaster risk managers, agencies, and individuals to adopt a proactive approach in order to prevent loss of lives and property during the rainy season. NiMet assured the public that its Central Forecast Office (CFO) will continue to monitor the weather conditions and provide updates as necessary.
