According to reports, the bank officials arrived at the victim’s house located in the Abule Ijoko Lemode area of Ifo Local Government to collect the money owed by Ms Omo’s husband. However, upon their arrival, they were informed by the deceased that her husband was not present at home.
The Ogun State police spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday, revealing that the bank officials were dissatisfied with the claim that the debtor was absent.
In an attempt to enforce the debt repayment, they allegedly decided to confiscate some electronic items from the household. It was during this confrontation that the late Ms Omo resisted their actions.
Tragically, the situation escalated when one of the bank officials allegedly pushed Ms Omo, causing her to fall and lose consciousness. She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention, but sadly, the attending doctor pronounced her dead.
Upon receiving a report of the incident from the deceased’s daughter, the Agbado divisional police headquarters swiftly responded.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Awoniyi Adekunle, led his team of detectives to the scene, where they apprehended the four bank officials involved. The arrested individuals were identified as Badmus Olalekan, Ajibade Oludare, Eniola Aduragbemi, and Femi Oloko.
To facilitate further investigations, the remains of Ms Vivian Omo were transferred to the morgue at Ifo General Hospital for an autopsy.
Responding to the tragic incident, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Olanrewaju Oladimeji, directed the immediate transfer of the suspects to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (CIID).
He strongly condemned the actions of the bank officials and issued a stern warning to all loan agencies, urging them to refrain from taking the law into their own hands while attempting to recover debts.
The Commissioner emphasized that any individual found engaging in such acts would face arrest and subsequent prosecution.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the need for peaceful and lawful debt recovery procedures.
