EKO HOT BLOG reports that Festus Keyamo, the Minister of State for Labour, Employment and Productivity, disclosed that the outgoing President of Nigeria, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), will not approve the proposed 65-year retirement age for Nigerian workers.

The Minister made the statement in an interview with the Punch in Abuja on Monday.

The National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, had earlier called for a new retirement age for civil servants during the 2023 Workers’ Day celebrations in Abuja.

Ajaero also demanded a review of core civil servant salaries to reduce the gap between their emoluments and those in other segments of public service, including an extension of years of service to 65 years and 40 years of service.

However, Keyamo stated that the change to 65 years will not happen during Buhari’s tenure and will likely be considered by the next administration.

“The process to effect that change to 65 years (if it is accepted by the Federal Government) is a process that cannot be completed before the end of the tenure of Buhari. So, I guess the new administration will have to deal with that,” the minister stated.
