Sudan Crisis: Reps Urge Nigerian Universities To Absorb Student Returnees

EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a bid to address the plight of Nigerian students affected by the ongoing Sudan crisis, the House of Representatives has passed a resolution calling on tertiary institutions across Nigeria to accept these students into their academic programs.

The decision was reached during a session on Tuesday following a motion of urgent public importance presented by Sada Soli.

The civil war in Sudan has caused the evacuation of numerous Nigerian students from the country, severely disrupting their educational pursuits.

Recognizing the need for immediate intervention, Soli emphasized the importance of the Federal Government stepping in to facilitate the absorption of these students into Nigerian universities, enabling them to continue their education seamlessly.

Additionally, Soli urged the government to grant waivers to universities, particularly in the fields of law and medicine, allowing them to admit more students affected by the Sudan crisis. He highlighted that similar measures had been taken for returnees from Ukraine, and thus, it was only fair to extend the same support to those coming from Sudan.

Soli stated, “There is a need for the Federal Government to consider the quota systems imposed on certain courses such as law and medicine and waive them for the students concerned to enable them to continue with their programs pending the resolution of the Sudan crisis.”

Recognizing the importance of swift action, the House of Representatives mandated the Committee on Tertiary Education and Services to ensure that tertiary institutions comply with the resolution and accommodate the affected students effectively.

The decision to absorb Sudan returnee students aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to providing quality education and supporting its citizens in times of crisis. By offering these students the opportunity to continue their education within the country, Nigeria aims to alleviate their academic hardships and foster their future prospects.
