Recognizing the various versions the DCU has gone through, Wan acknowledges the need for adjustments to stay in sync with the overall narrative while also giving “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” its distinct identity.
“The DCU has been through lots of different versions, and one of the things that was challenging about this film was keeping track of what’s going on. Fortunately, the Aquaman universe is pretty far removed from the rest of the world,” said Wan. He added, “We’re going to many different underwater kingdoms that are not necessarily related to what’s happening with the other movies and characters, so we’re stand-alone in that respect.”
Expressing optimism about the film’s progress, Wan pointed out the upcoming Directors Guild of America contract negotiations as a significant milestone in the production timeline.
Notably, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” will adopt a slightly more serious and thought-provoking tone compared to its predecessor. The film aims to tackle timely issues such as climate change, reflecting the Aquaman comic book’s long-standing commitment to environmental consciousness.
“It’s a big movie. I cannot wait for people to see it. I think people are going to be excited to see that this movie is quite different from the first movie in terms of tone,” revealed Wan. He continued, “We’re not afraid to lean into that in a big way because the Aquaman comic book, even way back when, has always been environmentally conscious. He’s always been someone who’s fought to keep the ocean clean, and it feels more relevant in the world that we’re living in today.”
While the sequel explores deeper themes, Wan assured fans that it remains a fun action-fantasy film. The movie promises to provide audiences with an engaging experience, delving into significant topics while delivering the thrilling undersea adventures that made the first film a success.
Jason Momoa, who made his debut as Aquaman in 2016’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” is set to reprise his role in “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.” Following his standalone film’s success, Momoa’s character has become an integral part of the DC Universe. Fans can expect to see him in “The Flash” before his return in the highly anticipated Aquaman sequel.
