FG Begins Mopping Up Of Firearms And Hunting Down Of Arms Traffickers
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Federal Government of Nigeria through The National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons have said it is mopping up illegal firearms in the hands of unauthoriszed persons and started the prosecution of arms traffickers in the country.
The zonal director, South West, Sola Akinlade disclosed this during a press briefing in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday.
Mr Sola Akinlade reiterated the resolve of the agency to retrieve all firearms and light weapons illegally acquired from circulation.
In his words, “We are mopping up arms. Recently the IG handed some arms to us in Abuja. We have Also collected from the military in Bauchi and Kaduna.”
“We have also commenced destruction of illegally acquired arms retrieved as well as prosecution of the perpetrators. We have a destructing site at Kaduna inside the Military Barack.”
“The construction of our armory is ongoing in Akure at Owena Cantonment” he added.
Mr Akinlade also called on the public to be wary of any unauthorized organization impersonating the center to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians, especially Youths by asking them to pay money for offer of employment as the center does not recruit.
He noted that the center is working rigorously to fish out all unauthorized makers of weapons in the country.
“We want to even say again here that we are after the fabricators who are manufacturing all this weapons; shotgun, double barrel etc.
“Some are even manufacturing AK-47 as good as those being used by the various security agencies.” he concluded.
