The presidency has debunked the rumor making headline on social media that president Buhari was making plans to actualize a third term agenda in office as president while describing him as a democrat who respects the constitution.
The presidency said in statement via its Twitter handle @NGRPresident “The Presidency wishes to correct internet-based gossip & un-informed media commentary regarding presidential term limits, given credence by so-called support groups, staging street demonstrations asking President @MBuhari to do a 3rd term.”
It could be recalled that the constitution stipulates a maximum of eight-year tenure for any political aspirant vying for the office of President. Buhari began his second term tenure in office as president after he was declared the winner of the 2019 presidential election and will end his tenure in 2023.
Meanwhile, the presidency has stressed that Buhari as a democrat will only serve his full second term as elected president and thereafter, ensures Nigerians are given the opportunity to elect a new president in 2023.
He said “President @MBuhari intends to serve his full second elected term in office, ending 2023 – and then there shall be a general election in which he will NOT be a candidate. There is not even the faintest possibility that this will change.”
The presidency also noted that it will take a constitutional amendment for any president to accomplish a third term ‘agenda’. Adding, “there was a past attempt to change the Constitution to allow for the-then incumbent president to stand for a third term. That attempt was wrong, unconstitutional — and rightly rebuffed.”
The presidency further assured Nigerians that no such attempt will happen under the Buhari led administration.
