The G20 group consists of 19 world’s richest and most powerful countries.
This move would give the 55 countries on the continent the same status as the European Union – the only regional bloc with a full membership currently.
If AU is granted membership on the group, that will end its status as “invited international organization”.
The only member of the group on the continent is South Africa.
A top government official from South Africa said the membership was still in deliberation as of Thursday at the ongoing G20 Summit in New Delhi, India.
Moreover, South African presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said: “We wouldn’t comment now until the official announcement or post the summit.”
Prime Minister of the host country, Narendra Modi, earlier in June, proposed to the leaders of the G20 in a letter, to give AU full membership of the bloc at the upcoming summit in New Delhi.
Modi wrote, in an article published across Indian and international newspapers on Thursday, “Our presidency has not only seen the largest-ever participation from African countries but has also pushed for the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member of the G20”.
According to reports, no one has been authorized to address the topic before the public until its conclusion on Friday.
However, the source, who pleaded anonymity said someone could falter the decision and rule against the proposal, even though, there were no objections against the move from any of the members.
There are speculations as to the decision the G20 leaders would reach tomorrow at the summit.
In addition, another source said the membership was expected to take effect only next year, when Brazil takes over the presidency from India.

Other countries vying for support for AU membership are Germany, Brazil, South Africa and Canada.
The G20 currently comprises 19 countries and the European Union. The members represent around 85% of global GDP, more than 75% of global trade and about two-thirds of the world population.
