“The ammunition is likely to be less high-tech than the ammunition that the United States has provided to Ukraine,” said Joseph Dempsey, a defense researcher at the International Institute for Strategic Studies. “But it could still be useful to Russia in the short term.”
Some analysts are concerned that the poor quality of the ammunition could be a liability for Russian forces. “Poorly made ammunition will have inconsistent performance,” said Patrick Hinton, a British Army fellow at the Royal United Services Institute. “It could land where it’s not expected to, which could have catastrophic consequences.”
Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to buy ammunition from North Korea is a difficult one for Russia.
