The House noted the importance of Yoruba language for passing information to passengers on the trains, especially new users. It also noted that the state had made conscious efforts to encourage the use of the language in public places.
The lawmakers also called on the Ministry of Environment to commence immediate clearing of drainage channels and canals across the state. This was in response to concerns raised by Hon. Kehinde Joseph representing Alimosho Constituency 2 about the flooding caused by heavy rains in the state.
Joseph said that some houses in his constituency had been damaged and some buildings had been submerged by floodwaters. He blamed the flooding on blocked drainage channels and canals, and called for the Ministry of Environment to take urgent action.
Other lawmakers who spoke on the matter also blamed the flooding on climate change and rise in sea level. They suggested a number of measures to address the problem, including the reintroduction of environmental sanitation and the creation of a stringent policy to ensure that drainages are cleared and fumigated regularly.
The Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, urged the relevant agencies to expedite action on the matter. She also called on each of the local governments to do their part, while the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) should be ready to play its role.
