Mimiko to Chair NMA Physicians’ Week
Former Governor of Ondo State, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, will chair the opening ceremony of the 2019 Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Physicians’ Week holding in Akure.
The event, which is an annual gathering of Nigerian Doctors, will hold at the NMA House Igbatoro Akure at 10am with the theme “Care of the Unknown Patient”
National President of NMA, Dayo Faduyile, who led the national executives members on a courtesy call on Mimiko in Ondo City on Monday, said the former Governor was chosen as chairperson of the event as a result of the giant strides recorded in the health sector during his tenure as Ondo state Governor.
According to him, “It is a well-established fact that road accidents is one of the major causes of deaths in Nigeria. Some of the accident victims who we referred to as “unknown patients” die on the scenes and sometimes at the point of accessing care. This is why we as Nigerian Doctors are coming together to critically analyse this situation and possibly come up with a policy statement in this regard.”
Faduyile who described “Mimiko as a successful medical practitioner and astitute politician” also said his outstanding record in Emergency Medical Services and the establishment of Ondo State University of Medical Sciences among other landmark achievements are what African leaders should emulate.
“It is in the light of this and many more of his (Mimiko) people-centered policies in all sectors and particularly in health that we have chosen to learn from his wealth of experience. There has been a major shift in maternal and child health indices in Ondo state with the home-grown Abiye Safemotherhood program. We know he has received many awards in this regard and humanity will continue to bless him” he said.
