Nigerian Community Most Vibrant And Educated In Houston Texas – Mayor
The Mayor of Houston Texas, (the third largest city in the United States), Mr Sylvester Turner has described the Nigeria Immigrant community in the United States of America (USA) as dynamic, the most vibrant and the most educated.
Turner applauded the Nigerian community in Houston during the Nigeria Day Celebration organised by the Clara Igwala Cultural Event, adding that, the contributions of the Nigerian community to the development of Houston could not be quantified.
He noted that the Nigeria day in Houston was part of the activities organised to mark the Nigeria’s 59 years of independence, since the country’s proclamation of independence from British rule on October 1st,1960.
“I can’t imagine the City of Houston without the Nigerian Community. The Nigeria Immigrant community is the largest and the most educated Immigrant community in the United State”, the Mayor stressed.
The Mayor noted that there was need to open a Nigerian consular in Houston.
“Right now, there is a Nigeria consular office in Atlanta. I need to make sure we open one in the city of Houston given the dynamic and vibrant population of Nigerians in Houston”, Turner said.
In an exclusive interview with Ekohotblog, the convener of the Nigeria Day in Houston, Ms Clara Igwala said “Nigerian Day is about collaboration; It is about celebrating Nigeria independence but most importantly, it is about patriotism and altruism”
“It is the story of a group of one of the most successful immigrant communities and the most highly educated immigrant community and the story must be narrated with pride”
Commenting on the issue of immigrant crime in the region, she said there would always be deviants in any community incuding the Nigerian community, but that by and large, most Nigerians in the diaspora were law abiding.
She added that the contribution of the Nigerian community to the socio-economic and political terrain of the United State could not be over emphasised,
Reacting to the surprise Community Award conferred on her by the Mayor of Houston, she said “It is always a great feeling when you are appreciated particularly by the Number One citizen of the 3rd largest city in the United States.
“The reward for hardwork is more hardwork,” she added.
