Lagos Police Arrest Three For Alleged Cyberstalking, Threat To Life, Other Offences
Eko Hot Blog reports that operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in the Lagos State Police Command have arrested three persons in connection to criminal petitions against them.
The Lagos police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed the development in a statement on Saturday.
He revealed the suspects as Dorcas Adeyinka ‘f’, Sikiru Ayinde ‘m’ and Folake Adekoya ‘f’.
Hundeyin said the trio was arrested following “numerous petitions from different persons” bordering on cyberstalking, cyber bullying, alleged abduction, threat to life and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
However, he did not disclose details or specifics of the petitions.
“The Police, having conducted preliminary investigations and establishing these cases against the suspects, arrested the suspects for a consolidation and harmonization of the investigations for possible prosecution,” the police spokesperson said
He also disclosed that the police had secured a remand order to keep the suspects in custody till January 10, 2024.
“To get adequate time for the conclusion of ongoing investigation, the Police have approached a court of competent jurisdiction and got a remand order for the suspects till January 10, 2024,” Hundeyin stated.
“The Force would continue to enforce extant laws of the nation, particularly those relating to cyberstalking and cyber bullying which can trigger violence if not adequately managed or curtailed.
“Members of the public will be kept abreast of developments as the investigation progresses.”
In a related development, a bill for the protection of children against internet violence, including cyberbullying, passed a second reading at the House of Representatives on Thursday.
The bill seeks “to mandate internet service providers to block access to materials depicting violent conduct, regulate illegal/restricted content irrespective of the host, and remove intimating images and videos shared online that negatively impact children.”
