Nigeria won despite being wasteful in front of goal.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Super Eagles of Nigeria have beaten Guinea-Bissau 1-0 in their third match of the Group Stage to reach the round of 16 in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire.
The victory came on Monday, thanks to an own goal by Guinea-Bissau defender, O. Sangante.
Nigeria’s left-winger Moses Simon engineered the lone goal of the match after controlling a good header by left-back Ola Aina nicely and playing a dangerous pass into the opponents’ box. Sangante could not sort out his feet and slot the ball past his own goalkeeper to give the Super Eagles the lead in the 36th minute.
Victor Osimhen had the ball in the net later in the second half but his goal was disallowed after he handled the ball before slotting it in.
Zaidu Sanusi also had another goal disallowed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) after the Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Jonas Mendes saved a shot from Osimhen. It wasn’t clear why the goal was disallowed because both the Napoli striker and Sanusi were onside.
The Super Eagles’ victory came days after they beat hosts Cote d’Ivoire 1-0 in their second group game and drawing 1-1 with Equatorial Guinea in their opening game.
They finished second in the group on goal difference with 7 points, just behind Equatorial Guinea, who thrashed the tournament hosts 4-0 on Monday evening.
