ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, issued a statement cautioning citizens against self-kidnapping and revealing the arrest of the couple.
The couple, identified as Doubara David Yabrifa and Regina Yabrifa, confessed to planning the self-kidnap to raise N3 million for purchasing a property in Badagry, citing financial difficulties and lack of support from relatives.
Both were arrested and charged to court after a family member reported the purported kidnapping to the authorities.
A troubling trend emerged as citizens like Albarka Sukuya in Plateau State staged repeated self-kidnappings, collecting ransoms from unsuspecting community members.
In Abuja, Nnamdi Agu attempted to defraud his family by faking his own kidnapping to fund personal pleasures; the police thwarted the staged kidnapping and arrested the suspect.
FPRO Olumuyiwa Adejobi warned against the criminal nature of self-kidnapping, stressing that the police would enforce the law rigorously.
He urged the media, social media influencers, and bloggers to verify news before dissemination to prevent panic and uphold security arrangements.
The pervasive issue of abductions, initially predominant in the North-West, has now spread nationwide, impacting major cities as criminal elements diversify their operations.
