U.S. Secretary Of State Commends Nigeria’s Health Efforts

Blinken, satisfied with NIMR’s progress, hailed it as a powerful example of U.S.-Nigeria collaboration in public health, emphasizing the transition from aid to empowering self-sufficiency.
The visit affirmed U.S. commitment to supporting Nigeria’s healthcare, with investments of about $8.3 billion in HIV/AIDS initiatives, benefiting 1.6 million Nigerians.
Blinken lauded the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) program, which has evolved successfully across administrations, saving millions of lives.
He acknowledged Nigeria’s effective use of the PEPFAR platform during COVID-19, demonstrating the nation’s capacity to handle health crises autonomously.
Blinken emphasized the importance of knowledge transfer, citing NIMR’s contributions to research, diagnostics, and global health security.
Further more, he urged the extension of the PEPFAR program, emphasizing its role in saving lives, changing destinies, and strengthening global readiness for future health crises.
