This move follows President Bola Tinubu’s removal of the fuel subsidy on May 29, 2023, which prompted the government to provide N35,000 to each employee as a measure to mitigate the impact of the subsidy removal.

Organized labor has consistently emphasized the provisional nature of the N35,000 provision, underscoring the necessity for a comprehensive review of the minimum wage in 2024. The existing N30,000 minimum wage is due to expire at the end of March 2024.

In a statement on Sunday, the Director of Information at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Segun Imohiosen, revealed that the 37-member committee would be led by former Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Bukar Aji. The committee’s membership spans state government, the private sector, and organized labor.

Committee Membership:
– Bukar Aji (Chairman)
– Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Minister of State, Labour and Employment
– Mr. Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy
– Alhaji Atiku Bagudu, Minister of Budget Economic Planning
– Dr. Yemi Esan, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation
– Dr. Nnamdi Maurice Mbaeri, Permanent Secretary, GSO. OSGF
– Ekpo Nta, Esq, Chairman/CEO, NSIWC – Member/Secretary

The committee also includes governors representing various regions, private sector representatives, and organized labor leaders from the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria.

The inauguration of the committee underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the concerns and ensuring a fair and equitable national minimum wage for all citizens.
