Eko Hot Blog reports in the midst of ongoing speculations surrounding unpaid bonuses for the Super Eagles at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Nigerian defender Kenneth Omeruo has clarified that the team remains committed to their training and upcoming matches.

EDITOR’S PICK:

Omeruo revealed that despite the delay in bonus payments, the players are determined and focused on their performance in the tournament.

Speaking to ESPN, Omeruo addressed recent reports alleging discontent among senior players regarding squad captain Ahmed Musa’s representation of their interests. He dismissed the claims, stating, “The report is a joke. Musa showed us at lunch, and we laughed about it. We are focused on our game, believing that our money will be paid. This squad is not the one to fight over money; otherwise, you would have heard that we refused to go to training even before the tournament.”

The defender’s comments shed light on the unity and professionalism within the Super Eagles, emphasizing their dedication to the competition despite financial uncertainties.

Omeruo’s assurance comes as a response to concerns regarding the team’s morale and potential disruptions due to unpaid bonuses.

Nigerian Football Federation General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi provided insight into the payment process, indicating that the federation is working closely with the Central Bank of Nigeria to expedite the payments.

Sanusi expressed gratitude to the Central Bank for their efficiency in handling payment requests, stating, “We have not experienced any delays or complication of processes at the CBN this time, and we give kudos to them for their diligence and great sense of duty.”

According to ESPN, the Eagles’ pre-tournament agreement with the NFF involves graduated qualification bonuses for each round reached in the tournament.

Additionally, players will receive similarly graduated match-by-match bonuses based on their progress through the competition, departing from the previous system of only receiving payment on a match-by-match basis.

As the Super Eagles focus on their upcoming matches, the football community awaits the resolution of the bonus payment issue, with the team displaying resilience and unity amid the challenges.
