The attempt is scheduled to take place at the Edo State Library, Edo State Secretariat Complex along Sapele Road, Benin City, from February 23 to March 3, 2024.
Guinness World Records, renowned for documenting extraordinary human accomplishments and natural world extremes, has been an annual reference book since its inception in 1955 by Norris and Ross McWhirter, along with Sir Hugh Beaver.
Patience, a Diploma graduate of Maritime Engineering from the University of Benin and a current 500-level final-year student in the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Biology at Lagos State University, envisions her marathon as an opportunity to inspire a love for literature, particularly Benin literature and cultural heritage.
Her ambitious goal also aims to raise awareness about issues such as irregular migration, human trafficking, and climate change.
The 200-hour read-a-thon will feature continuous reading sessions covering meticulously curated themes, including Benin’s history and cultural heritage, migration, human trafficking, climate change, and art sessions, among others.
The event, which emphasizes community engagement, will be open to the public.
Expressing her excitement and determination, Patience stated, “I am honoured and grateful to have received approval from Guinness World Records. This is an incredible opportunity to promote the importance of reading and highlight the cultural richness of Edo State. I hope my efforts inspire others to embrace the power of books and storytelling.”
Guinness World Records has become a platform for individuals worldwide to showcase their unique talents and accomplishments. In 2023, several Nigerians attempted to set new records, including Philip Solomon, Chinonso Eche, Hilda Baci, Damilola Adeparusi, Oluwatobi Kufeji, Tonye Solomon, Lola Mewu, Helen Williams, Subair Enitan, and Amuda Mariam.
Osariemen Patience’s ambitious endeavor aligns with a global tradition of pushing boundaries and achieving feats that capture the imagination of people worldwide.
As she prepares for her marathon, Edo State eagerly anticipates witnessing this extraordinary journey of reading, discovery, and cultural celebration.
