PHOTOS: ‘Garri Is Now ₦1200, Tinubu Why?’ — Ibadan Residents Protest High Cost Of Living
Eko Hot Blog reports that Nigerians in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, on Monday, trooped out in their numbers to protest the high cost of living and called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately arrest the situation.
The protesters, who blocked vehicular movement, lamented that they could no longer afford essentials.
They carried placards reading messages such as, “Is this the renewed hope you [President Tinubu] promised?”, “End Nigerian Hardship”, Open Border and End Hardship”, “Garri is now ₦1200 per Congo, Tinubu Why?”, “End Bad Governance”, “End Good Hike and Inflation”, “Mr President, this is not hope, this is shege”, “Give us stable electricity”, among others.
The protest comes amid extreme living conditions across Nigeria exacerbated by high cost of living, low wages, and radical fiscal policies that have significantly lowered the value of the Naira.
In the past few weeks, the prices of food have jumped sharply, spurring the anger of many Nigerians.

The concerns over the high cost of living spurred governors elected on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to call for Tinubu’s resignation, claiming that he’s not up to the job, but the federal government rejected the call, blaming the state chief executives for not doing enough to support the president in their states.
Last week, the National Labour Congress (NLC) declared a two-day nationwide protest to demand that the Tinubu administration rescue Nigerians from their current hardship.

Earlier on Monday, Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Tinubu, sought patience from Nigerians for his father, expressing optimism that the present generation of Nigerians will eat the fruits of the current hardship in the country.
Seyi made the case in a post on Instagram on Monday.
The president’s son quoted a statement from his father which claimed that the Nigerian leader wished that Nigerians were not shouldering present burdens.
The quote further urged Nigerians to endure if they want a positive outcome for their future.
“There is no joy in seeing the people of this nation shoulder burdens that should have been shed years ago. I wish today’s difficulties did not exist. But we must endure if we are to reach the good side of our future,” Seyi quoted Tinubu as saying.
The president’s son also gave his own counsel to Nigerians, urging them to believe in his father because the country is in “great hands.”
He also made the bold claim that “our generation will yield the fruits of this hardship.”
During Tinubu’s inaugural address as president on May 29, 2023, he declared that fuel subsidy was gone, although he fiercely kicked again the same move by former President Goodluck Jonathan in January 2012.
The sudden announcement more than tripled the pump price of petrol even though the national minimum wage has remained the same since 2019, further reducing the purchasing power of citizens.
