Reviving Civil Service As A Call for Professionalism – Prof. Olaopa Urges

Speaking at a meeting with Mr. Phillips Dada, the newly elected Vice President of the African Association for Public Administration and Management (AAPAM), in Abuja, Prof. Olaopa stressed the need for concerted efforts to reinvigorate the profession.

Highlighting the challenges faced by the civil service, Prof. Olaopa underscored the importance of professionalism in restoring its stature. He emphasized the significance of administrative reform aimed at re-professionalizing public administration practice in Nigeria and empowering key figures within the profession. Prof. Olaopa, a lifelong civil servant, paid tribute to iconic figures in the field and acknowledged the relentless efforts of colleagues to redeem the profession.

Expressing concern over the declining appeal of civil service careers, Prof. Olaopa asserted, “We cannot leave civil service redemption to chance.” He called upon a collective of professionals, including public servants, scholars, and development practitioners, to spearhead efforts in restoring professionalism within the sector. Stressing the role of professional gatekeepers, he warned against the infiltration of charlatans and impostors, urging vigilance to safeguard the integrity of the profession.

In response, Mr. Dada commended Nigeria’s pivotal role in AAPAM and expressed a desire to revitalize the association in collaboration with the FCSC. He emphasized the importance of partnership in promoting public administration and management in Nigeria, citing the country’s influence as a founding member of AAPAM.
