Hardship: Falana Tells Tinubu Govt To Review Fuel Subsidy Removal

  • Alleges the country is still paying for fuel subsidy despite removal

  • Calls for transparency on subsidy payments instead of asking Nigerians to endure hardship

Eko Hot Blog reports that human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has urged the President Bola Tinubu-led government to review its fuel subsidy removal policy, citing allegations that the country is still paying for the subsidy.

In a statement titled “Fuel subsidy again?”, Falana stressed that it’s high time the federal government reviewed the fuel subsidy removal rather than urging Nigerians to continue enduring hardship.

“The World Bank and the CEO of Pinnacle Oil and Gas claimed that the Federal Government is still paying subsidy for the product,” Falana stated, questioning the opacity surrounding fuel importation from foreign countries.

He recalled that after the Buhari administration announced subsidy removal, it spent N11 trillion on “under-recovery” within eight years.

“Instead of urging Nigerians to continue to endure the hardship caused by the removal of subsidies on petrol, the Bola Tinubu administration should review the policy if it is spending as much as N1 trillion on fuel subsidy per month,” Falana urged.

The human rights lawyer called for transparency, demanding that the federal government confirm or deny the allegations and review the policy in the interest of Nigerians.
