The organization, known for advocating good governance and public accountability, condemned what it termed as coordinated media assaults aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the IGP.
In a press release issued in Abuja over the weekend, Ambassador Solomon Adodo, the national convener of RUN, denounced the malicious attempts to link the IGP to alleged criminal activities. Adodo emphasized that such actions were criminal and unpatriotic, driven by desperate elements seeking to undermine national security efforts.
The release highlighted the baseless nature of the accusations, particularly regarding a harmless photograph depicting the IGP alongside an individual identified as IDP Dende. RUN refuted claims that Egbetokun was providing cover for any smuggling kingpin, asserting that the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) is not responsible for border protection and cannot facilitate criminal activities across borders.
Describing Egbetokun as a disciplined and highly professional officer, RUN commended his efforts in reforming the NPF since assuming office.
