Eko Hot Blog reports that in a disappointing turn of events for Ghanaian chef Failatu Abdul-Razak, her attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon has been rejected by the organization.

Editor’s Pick:

Despite her remarkable feat of cooking non-stop for over 227 hours in January 2024, which sparked excitement online and offline, Guinness World Records (GWR) cited a “violation of the stringent guidelines set forth” as the reason for the rejection.

Kafui Dey, the coordinator of Failatu’s team, confirmed the rejection on Sunday, as a GWR spokesperson acknowledged her effort while explaining, “We commend Failatu on her tremendous efforts with this record attempt…It was due to guidelines around rest break timings not being met.”

Failatu’s attempt had garnered significant attention throughout Ghana and across Africa, with politicians, including Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia, and celebrities rallying in support of the chef throughout the cook-a-thon.

Despite her unsuccessful bid, Failatu expressed gratitude towards her followers, stating, “Their support has been instrumental throughout this journey.”

The existing record for the longest cooking marathon remains held by Irish chef Alan Fisher, who cooked for 119 hours and 57 minutes, more than 24 hours longer than the previous record held by Nigerian chef Hilda Baci.

While Failatu’s valiant effort fell short, her determination and the support she received serve as a testament to the passion and commitment of the culinary community in Ghana and beyond.
