Residents affected by the recent explosion in Bodija, Ibadan, have voiced out their frustrations, claiming neglect by the state government. Ayo Ogunlola, one of the victims, expressed their dismay, stating, “We were originally housed at Calton Gate Hotels, a gesture we sincerely appreciate. On February 16, the hotel management decided to forcefully evict us using various tactics.”

According to the residents, they were relocated to Orchard Hotels but faced similar challenges. “The so-called one meal has been stopped and light is gradually being withdrawn,” Ogunlola added.

Another victim, Ibrahim Adekunle, highlighted the efforts being made by their association to seek assistance from the government. “We expect the government to take action,” Adekunle emphasized.

However, the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, refuted the claims of neglect, stating, “The government has been spending between N15m and N20m weekly on accommodation and feeding for the victims in the past eight weeks.”

Oyelade further explained that over N160m had been spent on accommodation and feeding alone, with additional funds covering medical bills and security measures. He clarified that victims were relocated to another hotel for routine fumigation, emphasizing that the government had promptly arranged transportation for their transfer.

In response to allegations of reduced meals, Oyelade stated, “The government sees this explosion as equally spurious because many hotels provide complimentary breakfast, and most of our wards go out in the daytime, hence, the government’s decision to provide dinner.”
