While some residents welcomed the relief efforts, others highlighted areas requiring additional attention. Chief Dada Yesiru Agbon, a respected leader from Epe town, emphasized the need for comprehensive support from the government.
Chief Agbon underscored the importance of inclusive leadership, calling for all residents to be considered in developmental efforts. “A leader is someone who carries all the residents along,” he asserted, “Everything they are doing, all the elders in the town should be carried along.”
Beyond general support, Chief Agbon highlighted the specific need for government intervention to bolster the agricultural sector, particularly fish farming.
He called for the clearing of “water hazards,” which he claims are responsible for the deaths of fish in local farms.
“What the whites call water hazard, we want the government to clear all those water hazards, so that those doing fishing can do it properly; so the fish don’t die,” Chief Agbon stated.
Some have alleged that dredgers are contributing to the fish deaths, but Chief Agbon believes the water hazards and chemicals used to clear them are the primary culprits.
He appealed for authorities to address these environmental issues, which are affecting the livelihoods of local fishermen.
