The solemn occasion of Easter Vigil underscores the pope’s commitment to his duties amidst physical challenges.
Eko hot blog reports that, despite renewed concerns about his health, Pope Francis led a more than 2-hour Easter Vigil Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, displaying resilience and determination in the face of physical challenges.
While his voice occasionally faltered, the 87-year-old pontiff delivered all his prepared texts, including a lengthy homily, before departing in a wheelchair, acknowledging the congregation with a smile and wave.
The pope’s absence from Friday’s Via Crucis procession at the Colosseum was attributed to a desire to “preserve his health,” reflecting recent efforts to manage his well-being amidst struggles with colds, bronchitis, and the flu.
Despite mobility restrictions due to a knee ailment, Pope Francis has continued to fulfill his duties, notably performing a foot-washing ceremony and leading a Good Friday service earlier in the week.
The Easter Vigil, a solemn ceremony marking the transition from darkness to light symbolizing Jesus’ resurrection, drew approximately 6,000 attendees to Christendom’s largest church.
During his homily, Pope Francis urged Christians to maintain faith in the face of adversity, highlighting the importance of compassion and peace in building a more just and humane society.
As Easter celebrations culminate on Sunday with Mass in St. Peter’s Square and the traditional “Urbi et Orbi” blessing, the pontiff’s steadfast leadership serves as a source of inspiration for the faithful worldwide.
