Karateists Showcase Skills In Lagos Open Trials
• 36 participants compete in Kata and Kumite categories
• Trials serve as selection for upcoming championships
• Winners express determination to represent Lagos, Nigeria

Eko Hot Blog report that in a display of martial arts prowess, the Lagos State Karate Association recently organized open trials for senior karateists, attracting 36 participants to the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre in Rowe Park, Yaba.

The trials featured both male and female competitors vying for spots in the upcoming Senior Strata Base Karate Championship in Rivers State and other subsequent tournaments.

The rigorous trials, which encompassed Kata and Kumite disciplines, were designed to evaluate the participants’ level of preparation and select the best among them for upcoming competitions. According to Lagos State Karate Coach, Shoyoye Shola Sounaka, the essence of the trials was to “form a formidable team and prepare karateists for the upcoming Senior Strata Base Karate Championship.”

Sounaka expressed enthusiasm for the emerging talent in the martial arts, stating, “Lagos State is coming up with new faces (Boys and Girls) in the martial arts, adding that the trials have given more confidence to the athletes and a level playing field to showcase their skills in the art.”

Among the participants, Tomiwa Ayomide Babarinde, who clinched a gold medal in the Kumite 65kg category, expressed his determination to make the state and country proud. “It is the beginning of a new dawn, and I want to make the state proud as well as flying the country’s colors at the national and international competitions,” Babarinde said.

Owoyemi Precious, the winner in the 67kg category, attributed her success as a beginner to her resilience, dedication, and unwavering support from the coaches.

Other winners included Donlyn Vehenna Divine (+70kg), Okeowo Balikis (+65kg), and Abbey Taiwo, who emerged victorious in their respective weight categories.
