The inauguration, held at an exhibition center in Diamniadio near Dakar, the capital of Senegal, was a significant event attended by prominent figures from across the continent. Among the dignitaries present were President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana and President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone.
Faye, now the youngest African president at 44 years old, took the oath of office on Tuesday, marking a new chapter in Senegal’s political landscape. His rise to power followed the March 24 presidential election, which was held after numerous postponements by former President Macky Sall.
In a closely contested race, Faye emerged victorious, securing 54 percent of the votes cast, defeating his main rival, Amadou Ba, Senegal’s former prime minister. Notably, Faye’s journey to the presidency was not without challenges, as he was released from detention alongside his political mentor, Ousmane Sanko, just ten days before the commencement of the election campaign.
