Onakoya kicked off his 58-hour attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest unbeaten chess marathon on Wednesday, April 17, starting at 10 am in Times Square, New York. According to Tiltify, he is set to wrap up at 8 pm on Friday (US time today).

The existing Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon stands at 56 hours, nine minutes, and 37 seconds, achieved by Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad of Norway on November 11, 2018.

At the time of this report, the chess maverick had surpassed 30 hours, securing victory in numerous games played along the way.

Reacting to Onakoya’s Guinness World Record attempt, Tinubu simply wrote on X, “Checkmate the world Tunde Onakoya.”

“Mr Onakoya is a symbol of excellence and resilience that distinguishes Nigerians both at home and abroad and we stand with him in spirit as he captivates the world from Times Square, New York City. Go, make history and inscribe our name in gold.”

Former Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, also commended the chess player, sharing a photo of himself engaged in a game of chess with Onakoya.
