Currently, Indonesian law does not recognize dual citizenship for adults, requiring individuals with two passports to choose one and renounce the other upon turning 18.
Luhut Pandjaitan, the coordinating minister for maritime affairs and investment, outlined the government’s intention to grant dual citizenship to former Indonesian citizens residing overseas, though specifics were not provided.
He expressed optimism that this initiative would encourage highly skilled Indonesians to return to their homeland. Notably, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced a significant $1.7 billion investment in Indonesia.
The potential policy shift comes amid reports that missile debris found in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on January 2 originated from a North Korean ballistic missile.
Over the past few years, approximately 4,000 Indonesians obtained Singaporean citizenship, raising questions about the implications of dual citizenship.
The Directorate General of Immigration did not immediately respond to inquiries regarding the proposed dual citizenship program.
