Once revered as Epe Eleja and the state’s food basket, Epe has lost its esteemed position.
The region no longer contributes significantly to the state’s GDP.
Recalling his childhood, Dr. Onakoya shared people traveled to Mojoda for renowned Garri.
However, Garri production has ceased in Mojoda, with traders outsourcing from Ondo Oloko.
The sale of agricultural lands to foreign entities left no space for cassava cultivation.
Dredging activities also impacted fisheries, forcing women to abandon fishing livelihoods.
“Even our once-thriving fisheries have been adversely impacted by dredging activities, forcing our women to abandon their fishing livelihoods,” Dr. Onakoya revealed, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable practices.
Dr. Onakoya appreciated CNI’s invaluable contribution to address these challenges.
He stated reclaiming lands from illegal developers and returning to farming would aid food security.
“The crucial step is farming to produce for sustenance and surplus,” Dr. Onakoya said.
He urged the community to embrace heritage, return to farming for food abundance.
Dr. Onakoya envisioned Epe regaining its glory as a thriving commercial center.
