Tunji Alausa Drives Nigeria’s Push For Local Syringe Production

Eko Hot Blog reports that spearheading a push to bolster Nigeria’s domestic manufacturing capabilities, the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has taken a firm stance against the use of foreign-made syringes and needles in federal tertiary hospitals.

In a circular issued on Friday, Dr. Alausa instructed all Chief Medical Directors (CMDs) and Medical Directors (MDs) to source these essential medical supplies exclusively from NAFDAC-approved local manufacturers.

Furthermore, Dr. Alausa directed the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to cease issuing licenses for the importation of foreign-made needles and syringes.

This decisive move aims to support local production and protect the country’s manufacturing industry from foreign competition.

Emphasizing the rationale behind this directive, Dr. Alausa stated, “Mr. President has directed that this must stop. We all agreed to take the necessary steps to immediately remedy this sad situation.”

He highlighted the challenges faced by local pharmaceutical companies producing these medical supplies, noting that many have closed down in recent years due to the influx of substandard foreign products in the market.

“NAFDAC has been mandated to stop issuing licenses for the importation of foreign manufactured needles and syringes. It is also to de-list companies involved in the importation of these products going forward,” Dr. Alausa added, underscoring the government’s commitment to safeguarding domestic industries.
