This warning comes amidst ongoing negotiations in Cairo aimed at brokering a ceasefire plan for the conflict-ridden enclave.
During an interview with CNN on Wednesday, President Biden emphasized, “I made it clear that if they go into Rafah, I’m not supplying the weapons.”
This marks the first time Biden has publicly stated the potential consequences of such an incursion.
His administration has consistently pressed Israel for details on how it plans to safeguard civilians in Rafah.
Acknowledging the grim reality of civilian casualties resulting from the prolonged offensive, Biden’s remarks underscore the urgency of preventing further escalation.
The President’s comments add to mounting pressure on Israel to exercise restraint, particularly in Rafah, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have sought refuge amid escalating violence.
While there has been no immediate response from Israel to Biden’s remarks, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has affirmed his commitment to proceed with the Rafah operation.
Israel argues that targeting Rafah is essential to neutralizing what it claims are thousands of Hamas fighters entrenched in the area.
Meanwhile, Israel has persisted with tank and aerial strikes in southern Gaza, following its entry via the Rafah border crossing with Egypt on Tuesday.
This incursion has resulted in the disruption of a vital aid route, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
President Biden faces mounting pressure, both from within his own party and through growing campus protests, urging him to deter Israel from escalating the conflict further.
His support for Israel has become a contentious issue, particularly as he navigates his bid for re-election.
As the largest supplier of weapons to Israel, the United States plays a pivotal role in the dynamics of the conflict.
