EDITOR’S PICK

His remarks came amid unrest at various college campuses over Israel’s military operations in Gaza.

Alito emphasized that the exchange of ideas should be most protected on college campuses, but “very few colleges live up to that ideal.”

He praised Franciscan University as one of the exceptions, but cautioned that the broader world is more challenging.

Alito, a conservative Catholic justice, has previously raised concerns about freedom of religion being under attack and has voted to expand religious rights.

He told the graduating students that freedom of religion is also imperiled and that they will face pressure to endorse ideas they don’t believe in or abandon their core beliefs. He urged them to “stand firm.”

As the Supreme Court prepares to issue major rulings on contentious issues like abortion, gun rights, and former President Donald Trump’s immunity from prosecution, Alito and other conservative justices are making public appearances.
