During a lengthy phone call with Punch correspondent on Friday, the mild-mannered coach expressed disbelief at the club management’s decision to remove him due to poor results stating that he had diligently worked to qualify the club for continental competitions over the past five years.
He said, “I was asked to step aside by the management because they think the results are not favourable.
“We are 13th in the table with some outstanding matches due to our involvement in the CAF Confederation Cup.
“We have been playing consistently on the continent in the last four or five years. Rivers United are the 18th-best club in Africa.
“I did my best for the club and would have continued to do better, but since the management thinks otherwise, I had to move on.
He continues, “I don’t have any immediate engagements. I would think of my next destination after taking a rest.
“I also need to spend more time with my family.”
Eguma was dismissed immediately following Rivers United’s 2-1 loss to Remo Stars in a rescheduled fixture in Ikenne, Ogun State, on Sunday.
He had been tasked by the club to secure a victory against the Sky Blue Stars.
His assistant, Evan Ogenyi, took charge of the team in the 0-0 draw against Kwara United on Thursday.
Dubbed ‘Capelo’, Eguma steered the club to victory in the 2021 NPFL title and also secured a second-place finish in the 2016 domestic top flight.
